brain itches Theme by Adam Holwerda.
Sustainability is about the relationship between the two most complex systems on earth - human social systems and living systems. In this book, people argue eloquently against corporate control of our living systems and for the adoption of a new ethos. We are losing our living systems either by overt destruction or, even more insidiously, by genetic pollution. The living systems that are being corporatized include our forests, oceans, coral reefs, and wetlands; they include our food, our seeds, our genome, the water, grasslands and oceans. The interrelationship between human and living systems determines every person’s existence and underlies the rise and fall of every civilization. While the word “sustainability” is relatively new, every culture has confronted this relationship for better or ill. Historically, no civilization has reversed its tracks with respect to the environment; rather, civilizations have declined and disappeared because they forfeited their own habits. For the first time in history, meaningful numbers of people are trying to arrest this slide and understand how to live on earth. This is a watershed in human existence.
